Why I think photography is important

Updated: May 27

I'm a photographer, so I know I'm biased. Believe it or not though, I used to think portrait photography was a silly luxury splurge. I wondered why the heck people wanted so many images of themselves! That all changed though when I got my engagement pictures done back in 2016 (I think?! It's been so long now and I'm too lazy to go back and check if that's the right year). The session itself was fun and it made me feel like mine and my husbands love was seen and recognized. When I got the pictures back, it brought me so much joy! Here was an important time in my life captured in these images that I could look back at for years to come. To me, that was priceless. I often still look back at those images, smiling to myself while remembering how happy and excited we were to get married. So for me, good portrait photography captures emotion and leaves you with memories. Now, our engagement photographer is a close friend of ours.

Whiiiich brings me to my second point. Photography is all about connections. If we hadn't gotten those images done we would have never met our now friend! That is one of my goals in this business- to meet new people and form genuine connections with them. I love hearing about people and their lives. Trust me, I will listen to your sappy love story and cry at all the right points in the story (probably because I'll have been crying the whole time, but that's just semantics). It is also a time for you to connect with your family, spouse, etc, etc. How often do you get times where you actively get to showcase your love for each other?? It's really a great feeling and brings you closer together. Personally, back in May, I got images done with my family when they came to visit. It was so fun to plan out what we were going to wear, get ready together and get to be silly in front of the camera together. And now, we have beautiful images to remember that trip by.

Lastly, and this one is a bit more lighthearted, getting pictures done makes you feel like and model for a day! I know that seems silly, but hear me out- how often do you get to dress up, look your best, and have someone put you in flattering poses and tell you how great you look?? I know it definitely doesn't happen for me everyday (currently sitting in sweatpants and tee shirt with my hair in a messy bun). It's just nice and fun to do and it makes you feel good about yourself!

Anyway, I hope this helps you understand why I think photography is important and why I love it so much. To summarize (or if you didn't read the whole thing- don't worry, I'm not judging), here is what I hope you take away from this:

1. Photography captures emotion and leaves you with memories.

2. Photography is all about forming genuine connections.

3. Treat your self! Getting pictures done makes you feel like and model for a day!

Wishing you all the best this snowy weekend!
